Background of the Study

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube have transformed from mere social networking sites into powerful tools for the dissemination and consumption of news. The rapid penetration of the internet and the proliferation of mobile technology have facilitated this shift, making news more accessible and immediate than ever before. The transition from traditional journalism to a more digital and social media-driven model has raised important questions about the nature, accuracy, and impact of news.

 

Historically, journalism has been rooted in traditional media forms, including newspapers, radio, and television, which have long served as the primary sources of news and information. These traditional platforms operated within a framework of editorial oversight, professional standards, and journalistic ethics. However, the rise of social media has disrupted this framework, introducing a new paradigm in which news is often delivered in real-time, with minimal editorial intervention (Fuchs, 2020). Algorithmic Gatekeeping: The process by which algorithms on social media platforms determine the visibility and reach of content, including news, based on factors such as user engagement, personalization, and relevance.
